A HISTORY OF BANSTEAD LODGE
The lodge was consecrated on the 28th of September 1928 at Freemasons Hall, its roots though can be traced back to 1925.
The railway and the subsequent development of the Nork area during the post first world war era directly led to the formation of Banstead Lodge as many of the new residents of Nork had moved there from London.
As the population grew it became known that there were several Masons living in the area which led to a lodge of instruction being formed before the lodge in 1925. Interestingly and historically Lodge was the 100th Lodge consecrated in the Province of Surrey
The first Master was W. Bro. George Heaver LGR.
The banner was presented to the Lodge in 1938 and incorporates the design of the founders' jewel, which unfortunately now we have no record of, but the lodge history stated it shows the tumble-down beacon, woolpacks, and bean leaves which according to the lodge history all have a historic interest in the village.
The banner was dedicated on 27th September 1952.
In 1938, to mark the passing of the Primus WM George Heaver the Lodge was presented with a loving cup, which was used at installation but, understandably, has not been used since Covid.
During the second world war, Sutton and District Masonic Hall was requisitioned so the lodge met at the Station Hotel in Sutton and subsequently at Riddington’s restaurant until the Masonic Hall was released in 1948.
An extract from the minutes of the installation meeting of 9th November 1940 records that during the ceremony of installation enemy aircraft were engaged in battle overhead, the ceremony proceeded with the sound of machine gun fire, during which, the Installing Master continued with great calm, remaining quite unruffled.
In 1945 Banstead Chapter was consecrated with Primus Principals being W. Bros. Rev. H. Barr, R. Bevis, and M. Andrews all founder members of the lodge.
Banstead Lodge is now just over 96 years old, and we head towards our centenary year in 2028, which we look forward to celebrating and remembering all our past members.
The lodge actively seeks to continue its special relationship with Banstead Village supporting many of its charities including the Rotary Club, Royal British Legion, Banstead Village Residents Association Christmas lights appeal and Banstead United Charities.
